Science Dictionary

This dictionary is an attempt to bring together all the varied terms used in the field of science under one easily accessible head. Besides using a simple language to explain the terms, most of the terms have been categorised under the three heads, that is, physics, chemistry and biology, to make the reader aware of the scientific field where the term finds its usage. Diagrams/figures/formula of selected terms placed below the word/terms for the convenience of the students.

Both concise and wide-ranging, this dictionary is an ideal reference work for students and a great introduction for non-scientists. Ideal for students of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, or astronomy, as well as for anyone needing clear definitions of scientific terms.

Science is the field of study concerned with discovering and describing the world around us by observing and experimenting. Science is an “empirical” field, that is, it develops a body of knowledge by observing things and performing experiments. The meticulous process of gathering and analyzing data is called the “scientific method” , and we something use science to describe the knowledge we already have. Science is also what’s involved in the performance of something complicated: “the science of making a perfect souffle”.

Science has tremendous scope, however, and its many separate discipline can differ greatly in terms of subject matter and the possible ways of studying that subject matter. No single path to discovery exist in science and no one clear-cut description can be given that accounts for all the ways in which scientific truth is pursued. Science begins with a question, for there is no known answer.Once a question is posed, a scientist next creates a list of plausible hypotheses, which might answer the question raised. In order to plan an experiment to test a plausible hypothesis, a scientist makes predictions which, assuming the hypothesis to be true , would be observable. Key to designing successful experiments is the identification of all variables relevant to both the observed phenomenon and the question posed.

A science dictionary includes many technical terms with precise , specialized meaning– terms not normally found in general dictionaries–making it an invaluable resources for students and professionals in scientific fields.
